Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by words as a young toddler. Ford began to be interested in acting when she was a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days however, Ford realised that it was not the right venue for her. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place at the third time she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. A classmate of hers included Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in the year 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. The stage was her main focus and was a member of the company's 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies which were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
